it's less formal, closer to English term "work" rather than "job". It is often used interchangeably with "praca" which is closer to "job". I believe "robota" originates from the proto-slavic word "orbota" which means labour. This is actually where the modern term "robot" comes from.

'robotnik' is labourer/worker in many slavic languages and robot is just a contraction of that
