It is such an indictment of this government in particular but also prior governments that we treat human beings like this in New Zealand.

This is absolutely despicable and an unacceptable status quo.

The biggest thing on this person’s wish list is to be able to buy cheese.

NZ is deeply broken.

Totally. In the past, govt. has unashamedly used charities to fill some of the unmet need. I mean why pay full wages when there's kind people who can't just turn away.
The current crew, channeling some pretty powerful nihilism defund those charities.
Ay?

In a nutshell, this is it.

In their deep hubric manner, believing that status as rich and sorted preclude any personal dependence on (a) charity...

They will never have the good grace to be embarrassed when relying on Coastguard or ambulance (air or land) or volunteer FENZ...

Agreed. I saw that article the other day about a charity hospital opening in Wellington. Such an indictment and indicator of failure in this country.

This is America. Go to the grocery store and see what is in people’s shopping carts. the price gouging is so bad, I won’t buy things even though I can afford them. A bag of Tostitos chips $10.99, used to be $5. It’s bullshit. Milk is $5 gallon. Thank you Kraft for new Mac and cheese w protein $3!

I remember when I got a food grant of like $80 while I was still job searching back in the day and just wandering around the supermarket going "omg what do I buy?" I'm so used to having to be frugal it's really hard to buy anything but the cheapest basics.

I hear you - they give the smallest possible budget for food and it is really hard to make it work. I find it one of the worst things about us, that we see anyone on a benefit as worthy of being forced to live right on the poverty line or below it. No one should live in poverty full stop.

its disgraceful ,considering many Polis of all stripes ,incl Ardern and Luxon also love to claim a 'relationship' with a merciful god in their life stories.

It enrages me .

You mean trickle down economics is not the solution?!

It’s strange, isn’t it, that paying people more doesn’t hurt the economy but boost it instead? Could it possibly be that increased income allows people to buy more things?

THIS IS NEW ZEALAND

What does that even mean. Benefit rates have always been extremely low and not a single government labour or nats have ever fixed it in any meaningful way.

"In new zealand, no one ever becomes homeless or starves" is a myth.

I noticed this series of articles dont mention rent or mortgage. It is so hard, as an older, single person to find anywhere to rent for under $350 a week.

On Jobseeker, she will be limited to less than six hours a week before they take that money off her

This is awful. I just wanted to cry reading that. And I feel she may well be better off than many. It's so wrong.

Me too - totally wrong. I feel so disgusted and angry to be represented right now by people who think this is perfectly fine.
