The two truths:
1) There is nothing wrong with porn, let people safely make it, let people safely enjoy it.
2) If you let people define porn as bad, authoritarians will ALWAYS expand the definition until their hands are around your neck.

Having professionally actually drawn such stuff, as well as other stuff that is at least risque, for decades and fighting throughout the 2010s to get any of it out, I concur

Do I enjoy porn? No. I also don't enjoy asparagus. Authoritarians wanting to ban books should be as absurd to us as them claiming a moral panic to ban produce.

Well shit. I guess I’ll send back this book of asparagus porn and figure out something else to get you for your birthday.

"It corrupts the youth--"

My Brother in Christ, the youth are watching the entire government shuffle their feet while a babbling racist bombs Iranian children. You want to stop bad influences? Ban war. Don't let sex criminals be president. Fund school lunches.

The US government set up a committee in 1969 to look into how harmful pornography was. When the report said that there was no real harm, the government voted to reject it.

There's nothing they like more than something that's harmless, hard to define, and that religions give them free license to be cruel against.

Also ask them how well banning alcohol, weed, and prostitution has gone in the past.

No you don't get it, this time they will succeed, they're just Built Different! (this is sarcasm) (literally the act of banning something, *any*thing, instantly makes it more attractive to a chunk of the population)

It doesn't matter if people still do it. They *want* them to. Because it gives them an excuse to jail, abuse, and kill dissidents. It will also give them an excuse whenever there's someone they don't like that they do that stuff to anyways.

Imagine being someone like Sinfest who'll make a thousand comics trying to explain addiction and the neural system just to say porn = bad, while you also see in real time his own sanity begin to dramatically slip into conspiracy

3) Defining porn as bad/illegal means that the production of porn becomes a site of exploitation of the worst sort (I mean, it’s bad, but it can always get worse)

Banning a thing will make the thing go away immediately. For example drugs. There are no drugs, because drugs are illegal! 🀑

They are already calling kids books about gay penguins porn, they really do think anything that deviates from their narrow conception of the world is obscene.

try growing up a girl and being told your body itself is pornographic

do you know how many otherwise progressive women have drank the "sluttiness invites r*pe" Koolaid and raise their daughters accordingly (slutty behavior = wearing a tank top)? we are not safe anywhere, least of all our own homes

This is about the larger free speech issue as well. Not the chud "don't criticize me" free speech which has always been incorrect. The actual, real issue of free speech where you must defend the right to make media that you don't like for the sake of everyone.

Take sex away from people. Make it forbidden, evil, limit it to ritualistic breeding. Force it to back up into suppressed sadism..

It is insidious . right wingers have expanded the definition of pornography to simply mean " provocative media" i am so tired

Prior to a Facebook tantrum so epic it lasted ten days and ended up with his wife stepping in and saying the issue was closed, one of my favorite SF authors did some really smart, kind work about the unionization of sex work in space and how much it would be a societal boon

There is no such thing as porn addiction. If you don't enjoy something, don't engage with it.

Science is clear: porn addiction is not and never has been a diagnosis. It's a symptom of high religiosity and sexual repression.

Adding onto it, even when there is an obsession/fixation for porn, it's not the porn's fault. It's the person having a severe lack of stimulation/dopamine, which taking the porn won't solve - they'll look for something else, be it food/games/etc. What they need is more accessible mental health care.

Banning all of those always makes things worse as well.

I'm not into porn either, but my impression is that while it can be an addiction, it mostly isn't.

Hey... no.
1. Nothing wrong with porn. Let people enjoy it.

2. People that are against porn generally see sex work as invalid and judge women, queers and trans people as dangerous.

3. Porn is part of culture and is art. Putting "" and exceptions to what makes porn okay is the problem.

Exactly. I would even add 3) if you allow people to define what porn is, they will define anything they don't like as "porn." We've already seen bills in state houses that define porn as pride flags or any depiction of a trans person, thus outlawing anything containing those images.

And you KNOW they won't stop at depictions. They'll start labelling queer people's mere existence in public as obscene.
I hate this timeline.
