I think some people have numbed themselves to a certain degree to protect themselves from the anxiety, but I also think most people just constantly feel like throwing up.

I don't know if it'll help you, but I've started intentionally cutting back on my national news consumption by like 80%, state news (Texas) by like 60%, and trying to focus more on local stuff that I actually have some control over. That and meditation/journaling have helped me stay functional.

It can be. It's just a response to emotions you don't want to process, don't know how to process, or believe that you shouldn't have in the first place. But most people don't realize they're doing it until years later when they get mystery health issues and emotional instability and go to therapy.
