D'aww, my cat does that (very) occasionally. So occasionally that it's been more than a year now, but it used to be more frequent.

And now that I think about it, she fetches toy mice, not balls, and I haven't thrown toy mice from the bed recently. (She doesn't fetch if it's not tossed from the bed.)
