There is semi-joke that the Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) has more historically authentic costuming than pretty much anything "medieval" that has come out of Hollywood in ages, because in it the rich wear some colours.

Even medieval peasants would wear brightly coloured garb, not just the rich.

This idea that everything was poo-coloured is more a reflection on us than on the 8th c Nottingham populace.

That is definately true. There were atleast cheaper reds and blues available as well, and you can make yellowish brown from onion peels that was abundantly available.
