Well it's pretty cool. You certainly wouldn't see other politicians going out and walking the street to see the people. I would be more impressed if he talked to folks and ask them how they were doing and actually listened.
When I was a kid, I remember meeting Senator Albert Gore.

We were sitting on my grandmother's front porch watching a 4th of July parade, when the senator walked up the porch steps shook everyone's hand and asked my dad how he was doing. They talked about some issues and the senator asked my dad what he would do to solve the problem.

My dad gave him his opinion and the senator said there's a few things we'd have to tweak and told him why. My dad gave him a couple of suggestions. And the senator said there's some good ideas there. I have no idea if Gore did something or not. But my dad was impressed that he at least listened.
