I spent a (thankfully brief) period of my life on assistance. I had many years after that in minimum wage jobs where I could only save a little. On minimum wage if I was careful I could get the better pair of winter boots once every 3 years instead of the cheap shitty ones every year. A luxury.

i'm grateful that my former workplace still gives me the full employee discount because i finally managed to replace my 13-year-old, extremely leaky chest waders last year with a nice pair i wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

Basically everything is in some level of triage. it never ends
