If you using Studio Ghibli AI ChatGPT—Miyazaki should personally get to hunt you for sport.

Using AI as a tool is fine, but taking full credit for something the AI did isn't right. More than that, though, I feel bad because many of them are probably capable of creating something great on their own—they just don’t see their own talent and believe AI is the only way they can succeed.

Even as a tool, it is monstrously power intensive and prone to intensifying our biases rather than challenging them. There’s also no ethical way to source the amount of information necessary to train an ai outside of a purely theoretical context.

I love when they tried to explained to him that they were working on making a computer able to draw like a human and he just asked: "Why?"

It's been just terrific seeing all the genAI guys posting chatGPT's new image capabilities by generating entirely new concepts in entirely new art styles never before seen lol jk it's just Ghibli cartoon abominations and thin white photorealistic teenaged girls in bikinis

Just to be transparent, this quote was from like over 10 years ago about using AI code to make zombies move more grotesquely iirc. Though it still applies to today

Yeah, this is a quote mining.

The second half is about (then-contemporary) autogenerated media, but the first part was more focused on the ableism aspect since the makers weren't very tactful about what inspired them.

It won't matter in a number of years.

I mean, why take a car when you could just walk, right? But none of us alive today know of a world before vehicles, so it's completely accepted that we can and should be able to operate a motor vehicle.

It's not like walking is gone though.

I want to show this to my students. There was a time when probably 90% knew about Studio Ghibli or Spirited Away/Tonari no Totoro or even Miyazaki himself. But today I'm lucky if 2 in a class of thirty know.

That quote hit me hard

Like AI has its uses, say a computer compiling an image based on a description but for use in actual art absolutely not.

that quote isnt about ai though. I hate ai dont get me wrong but that quote is about someone using cgi to generate "monstrous" and "inhuman" movement that actually just looks like a disabled person moving.

Congratulations, techbros, you made Miyazaki, of all people, into a grumpy old man.

Your "creation" is simply THAT shameful and disgusting.

What if I use it to make a Calvin and Hobbes comic in the style of Ponyo. Death penalty?

Guess what! If you save up a little money and find a struggling artist right here on Bluesky, you can actually PAY THEM and they will DRAW Calvin and Hobbes in the style of Ponyo FOR YOU, exactly how you want it!! Many can do it far better than the AI could do it, too!!!!

You shouldn’t even get the death penalty, your molecules should get rearranged then and there.

Every time I see this video I feel bad for the folks who made that thing, they're so proud of themselves and hoping to get acknowledgement from the master, and then he schools them HARD with just a few words.

But better they learn this young. He caught them just in time.

I’ve actually never seen the full quote, but the “we humans are losing faith in ourselves” part hits hard. It makes me genuinely sad for those who use AI to generate stuff, as they genuinely believe themselves to be incapable of creating things.

See, but at the same time some of them view that as creating something themself. It's a bit of a convoluted situation

It's not that they believe anything in their creative skills. They're bound by their consumerism. GenAI enables it.

Reminds me of when some idiot on YouTube tried to use ai to show a "live action" Mononoke?

And when folks told them about what Miyazaki thinks about ai, they doubled down and acted like it didnt matter cuz "aRt" and "iT aN hOmAgE"

ChatGPT is blocking these requests due to copyright. Everyone is using Grok to make these as far as i know.

Years ago they said machines will take all the work and humans can then just explore the arts...
But now we have machines doing art, playing your games, watching videos for you, so you can slave at a desk job more.
How long before they make an AI that "sleeps" for you so you can stay at work 24/7?

Correct! Literally SO MANY fan artists would LOVE to remake X in the style of Y. This is true for ALL genres.

Then you have a personal, custom piece WITH a genuine story AND you help a small time artist (maybe in your community!)

Wowie!

He is one of my greatest inspirations and it truly hurts how this technology is being used to stop people from creating in peace.
