Samuel Butler. Victorian era satire, yeah, kinda sci-fi. Each chapter takes on an element of this "found society" but really his own era that needs some side eye and they track onto modern issues so very well!

In the book, it was well after the mechanical freak out. It's been... 16 years since I read it, but I think he had trouble getting them to allow his pocket watch bc it was well after they had reoriented away from machines.
