People on bikes aren’t swerving to annoy drivers, they’re just trying not to die or destroy their mode of transportation.
This is generally what the bike portion looks like of our “shared” roads. Glorious.

Dear driver behind me: Why do I ride in the middle of the lane?

🚴So you don't pass and then right hook me
🚴‍♀️So you don't block me from turning left
🚴‍♂️If cars are parallel parked on the right, so I don't get doored
🚴‍♂️If cars are parked nose in, so I don't get backed into

🚴So you don't try to overtake me when cars are coming and squish me to the side
🚴‍♂️So you don't try to overtake me on a blind bend
🚴‍♀️To make myself visible to cars coming out of an alley
🚴‍♂️When there's a grate or debris on the side

I'm not trying to be dangerous for you. I'm trying to be safe for me.

I live in a rural area and I have non cyclist friends who ask why we don't ride as far to the right as we can.

I inform them that the right most 2/3s of the bike lane is glass and metal debris that never gets cleaned up after accidents.

Well. we do, it is simply the most we safely can.

This is why I started commuting on a full suspension mountain bike. Hardly ideal though.

It's why I generally just take the entire lane.

as much as fun as it is to swerve out in front of vehicles moving 60 km/hr - i tend to prefer not to unless my bike frame is about to be shattered by a pothole

Which is why I ride like almost 1 m from a curb, so I can swerve towards it to avoid a pothole.

They like watching cyclists ride over storm grates.

One street near my house which I ride frequently was supposed to get a bunch of work last summer. It's still a whole pile of shitty potholes. Which reminds me, I need to ping my alderman about that.

Why I am hyper aware!

After decades of commuting in London traffic I really noticed the toll the hypervigilance has taken on me. Going back into that environment occasionally I can really feel the stress that had become day-to-day normal.

Not just while biking, but as a pedestrian as well. I don't think people who mostly drive everywhere realize that the needed hyper awareness of our surroundings while walking in a city can be exhausting. Then they bang on about road safety being a shred responsibility.

Totally that!

Follow the money. This and many other harms trace to the barely understood central fact that our governments use hundreds of billions of public taxpayer dollars to massively subsidize -- and thus mandate -- the widespread use of a mode of transportation that is fundamentally unaffordable for all.

That looks like a nice section! Grates aren’t parallel with tires, no car parts or road kill or broken glass.

Looking on the "bright"ish side... at least that drain won't eat my tire. lol
