Live services have poisoned the video game well so much people no longer understand the concept of "a game came out, I played it, it's good, that's all"

People have completely forgotten the fact that PEAK specifically was a month long game jam game and meant to be nothing more than a fun little thing to do with your friends.

Tbph, peak being a success has impeded on the development of other games these guys were/are working on aka Crashout Crew

I remember Aggro Crab making a post where they were jokingly frustrated that PEAK's success overshadowed Another Crab's Treasure (their longtime passion project), but I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of that frustration was genuine.

I didn't know "live service" was a thing until games started selling "season passes." I tend to make a point to avoid those.

Not just Live Service. So many games doing Early Access also has not helped this case. Players become accustomed to getting new content on a somewhat regular basis. It can sometimes create an issue where the game never feels done, even in 1.0, so the players just want more and more.

not every game is designed to be played forever
or update forever

Live Service for sure, but also Early Access has played a role in this. Many cool Early Access games feel good enough at ‘launch’ that people forget they are EA and just see “oh this cool game I play received frequent content updates for 2 years”

Don't forget a game can still be fun and relevant the way it is. Without constant updates.

People forget that so much

Not to mention the whole "CCU's have dropped the game is dead" especially when they were looking at it for a Singleplayer game forgetting people will just play a game and move on and that not every game needs to be a forever game because they don't ever succeed either.

Is the same with any other program tbh. Like ppl want single purchase but then expect continued updates but like.. no? that don't make sense.
You pay once you get what you paid for and if the devs make a new feature or version you pay for it.
It don't make sense to keep expecting new stuff for free.

Dunno how widespread that actually is but I remember a while back (still on Twitter lol) ppl discussing subspriction services and Adobe n stuff and many thought like that which didn't make any sense to me.

This shit felt straight out the Onion! “Why haven’t you constantly updated the 10$ game I bought?!” You answered your own question dipshit!

i have a lot of issues with totk but im perfectly happy w the fact that it just came out fully formed with the devs saying they had no intention to do any updates or dlc

I bought the game on sale but still trying to go through age of Calamity before starting again , I hate the whole idea of video games being $70 but at least that one doesn't have any DLC

I play WAY more games that came out, MAYBE got an expansion later, and then moved on. Or even revisited them later! Why should I only ever do games that constantly deliver CONTENT, I dont want my entertainment to be my job

That recent ConcernedApe interview where he said roughly "I feel like I owe SDV players more updates because they might not play my other games" made me want to pull my head off my shoulders.

I am becoming a DLC radical. I might not even do a bugfix patch in mine.

Ya know what my most played non mmo game is? Lords of Magic, a fantasy strategy/rts game from the 90s that most definitely didn't get bug fixes until fans did it themselves.

(Mantera mod you rock)

I remember when games didn’t need 24/7 updates to be good.

This is why I like single player games. They're like books in a way. You go through them, they end, and then you move on.

Maybe read them again later if you feel like it.

I suspect the endless patch cycles and mandatory year of DLC that have been the norm for 15 years has also played a part in this conditioning.

That’s like one of my biggest pet peeves ever nowadays, people will say “Anyone remember this game? What happened to it? It’s kinda dead now.” and they’ll be describing a single player 4 hour long stylized skating game which never had any multiplayer options to begin with, it did its job.

Every time a big-name single player game comes out there's ALWAYS people going "omg game dead" a week or a month later
Like no, RE4 isn't "dead" people just finished playing

This also goes for people saying devs "abandoned" a game. Some games aren't meant to be updated & get constant new content.

Truer words have never been uttered, honestly these Kids have been so Fortnite-pilled they can't appreciate quality single player content.
