I had a fantastic English teacher in high school, a published author. His #1 rule was "yes, you can break the rules, but first you have to learn the rules". I still live by that.

Oh very much so yes. If you just saunter off without knowing the rules you'll make noise. But if you anchor in the rules and cast off from there, oh, fun abounds.
