DeviantART's biggest problem, imo, is that it's filled with so much slop, both human and AI-made. Constant low-effort, low-quality posts, and a lot of it isn't even art, like random screenshots and MS paint memes. It was a problem before, but the artist exodus after DreamUp was added made it worse.

When Eclipse made the interface useless and categories got killed off, I wiped it and never looked back...and that was well before the age of extruded slop.

Agreed, the loss of the categories, interface changes and the complete gutting of the search system actually finding what you're wanting without the result-stuffing.

I remember that before the AI slop I would block people just because they would upload 20 CGI images in a row and clog up search results.

That being said, I don't care that much for the ideal of platform-wide quality control. People got to start somewhere and it is subjective anyway.

Strong exception for AI slop, of course. You might suck, but you better damn well put in the effort.

My view is that there are plenty of artists out there willing to put effort into what they make, but many of them aren't willing to put it on DeviantArt. Why bother when it'll just get swallowed in a sea of garbage and spam? There are better places to post, with better curation and discoverability.

I really hate how hard it is being an artist now especially now that I’m older and getting better 🫩

This is the problem that Groups were supposed to solve, and they do a pretty good job of it.

Naturally, they're being neglected by the site.

I grieve so much for what our weird little corner of the internet devolved into.

Literally. I’ve seen so many god damn AI posts on my home page it’s crazy. Like why? I wanna see real art!

This is why curated places where you submit your art need to be used as signals more. It could be the weird groups on Telegram or on DA, at least they have groups, but I always found searching for them to be kinda obtuse and/or impossible.

I think that generative AI feature hit a bigger blow on DA. I found interesting some features, like groups. It seems they're got into a pit and they're trying not to drown 🤷

About the human-made slop, I think there can be ways to deal with that, AI slop would be even easier to take care of

I can't agree more. I still do my usual search for some subjects, but there are so many low-quality, even very repetitive stuff , like some will redo things that have been done dozens of times already. The amount of accounts I blocked just to remove them from my search results...

as someone who used to use it daily all the way back in '079it's really, really sad to see what it devolved into over the years

every time they panicked over some other gallery website or social media "innovation" and hastily implemented it, they became less and less about art(ists)
