Yeah, but game-sense-wise, it was a ridiculous rule. Utterly bonkers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I didn't exploit the shit out of that rule. Always the consummate rules lawyer (who consequently became a real lawyer).

A lot of rules don’t make sense. Damage on the stack kinda does in some instances. Like if a wizard throws a fireball at you and gets thanos snapped before it lands.
