The big question for me is whether this gets seen as an American defeat or a Trump one. Nice thing about a personalist regime is that the Supreme Leader can soak up all the blame once you replace him. And maybe that works here?

We all know there’s no chance of that. And President J.D. Vance wouldn’t exactly change course. I think a key question is whether Dems start building ties to our allies in partisan ways (as Trump & co do for our enemies) or simply show untrustworthiness by staying silent & taking allies for granted.
