I would assume there are other, more expedient ways of communicating with their families than email available to them. If they can email, surely they can text or have a Zoom call. So it’s a legitimate question.

it makes sense to me that they’d need a means of sending and receiving messages/instructions/whatever that are too complex for text messages and that they need to be able to read and absorb later on. so having email makes sense to me. the bizarre part is that it’s outlook!

I would imagine they can do whatever the surface hardware (and microwave Internet connection) can support. It's their leisure time to use however they like, I expect.

Singling out email as weird to include just seemed weird to me.
