Was the renderer still CPU-bound, maybe?

Yes here it is. I also couldn't make it seamlessly loop, in spite of using integer multiples for the transform keyframes on the clouds and whatnot. I "solved" it by rendering 2 camera passes from different angles and just perpetually crossfaded between them later.

Noice! The looping issue does sound a bit annoying, good workaround though :)

It must be. My renders also take like an hour to finish.
