they hate protesters regardless, but a media environment where even protests of hundreds of thousands just don't show up in their own papers, their TV reports, their various news outlets. so they have a closed environment where they can and do keep telling themselves that these are small, ignorable.

a previous media environment where even your most opposed elected officials are unable to ignore the existence of the protests, that does things. that introduces pressure in the mind.
