It's really funny growing up seeing jokes about how much people fucking hated these two characters on the N64 only to learn later down the line that there was just intense dissonance between gamers and the main characters who actually valued their safety and presence as friends

I remember a fan comic where Link gets tired of Navi and tries to do everything on his own and he gets his ass caved in by every monster in a fifteen mile radius because yeah turns out he actually needs her guidance

I remember this comic but not what it was from. I mostly remember that he couldn't hit a lantern with his fire arrows without her help, but yeah, other things too.

cant speak on navi because i havent played OOT but slippy is like, a delightful little man. i can't imagine any reason for somebody to not fuck with slippy

occasionally in OOT, Navi will make a little noise and ask for your attention to give you a hint or remind you of what to do.

This is mainly annoying if you can't filter out occasional notifications, or if you see it the same way as mom asking you to do the dishes.

I always found Slippy charming! He balances out the main cast.

He is a boy acting like a boy. He expresses what he feels, and yeah, he needs help sometimes, but tbh he talks and does just as much as the other characters?

Feels the like the slander he got was an early 2000’s gaming culture thing.

Also the fact that the other characters ALSO ask for help, as per the computer-controlled "assisting" pilots, so the Needs Help Sometimes thing falls flat when one really thinks about it.

Not only that but it's funny looking back now where modern games will truly not shut up about everything makes these characters look so much more quiet and better written, and all Navi can say is literally just "Hey! Look! Watch out!"
