In the early 80s many UK bars and pubs refused to let women order their drinks / stand at the bar. Switzerland's last canton to give women the vote waited until 1991. When I bought a house in 1992, even though I was over 18, my parents had to co-sign the mortgage because I was unmarried.

I got raised eyebrows whenever I ordered a pint instead of a half-pint at pubs in London in the early 90's.

I ordered a whiskey coke at a bar in the UK in 2007 and the bartender initially refused to give it to me because it was a man's drink. For the rest of the night, the male friends I was with went and ordered for me instead.
