The thing is, even though Magyar Sucks Too, the *hope* is that the outright, foreceful rejection of Orban's authoritarianism will be seen as an indication that Hungarians were prepared to do almost anything to get rid of him, even voting for a barely-lesser evil.

Not a proponent of just settling for incremental change, but it's worth noting that it's exactly how societies are nudged towards authoritarianism and I'm not mad when it goes the other direction

Magyar is also just a PM. He represents his party which is thoroughly reform-minded, even if he personally walked a line of conservative and nationalist position-taking.

I don't know if there were any viable, genuinely moderate candidates. I suspect their influence, if any, this deep into Orbanism was very limited.

Hungary has been under Orban's authoritarian thumb for 16 years; I'm pretty confident Hungarians are well out of patient for fuck ups at this point, and will make sure none of the newly elected forget those lessons.
