Isn’t that, like, the purpose of yard sales? Also, though, how does he know they’re not paying? Maybe tax is simply included in the price. Sales tax is a tax on sales, not purchases. It’s the merchant’s responsibility, which they typically pass on to the customer, but are allowed to just pay.

Well, there is a bit of a cross river trade between folks who buy stuff in Oregon (no sales tax) and then flip it for sale in WA. It's enough of an issue that people in WA are supposed to pay use taxes.

I worked with a guy at a pizza place - takeout only, ALMOST-NOT-QUITE-FAST-FOOD where we didn't get tips, but we had a tip jar. Youd walk out after an 8 hr shift with like, 8 bucks cash, maybe 15 if it was busy busy.

And he was PISSED that "everyone steals by not declaring it!"

I’m the organizer of our yearly neighborhood yard sale with like 50+ houses and someone called my telephone with this gripe. In order to get him to not call the tax fraud line, I offered to run the numbers with him and together we decided that the $21.87 per house wasn’t worth 50 separate reports.

Unless you need a permit, you don't really have to pay sales tax.

I am in California and (if I am reading this correctly) you get a pass unless you hold more than two and are selling a substantial amount. I bet most states are similar.
