People's responses to covid made me sympathise with the Churchill-attributed quote, "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." I mean, I get it.

The one that broke me was on a voter education canvass against a likely ballot measure

Guy invited me in, gets his whole family to join us, got me lemonade, listens for a minute, then says he’ll vote for whoever I say because I’m a nice guy

No questions, just firm, smiling assent because nice
