Deciding that I don't want to focus on art as a career path anymore has been somewhat freeing.
I'll draw whenever I want. I'll hurt my reputation. It don't matter

I don't think it will ruin your reputation. Your work will stand for itself.

I did major in Arts at college but then spent the next 25 years as an IT corporate specialist so... I don't know what to tell you 😅

In any case, I see art-as-a-career more of a consequence than an end goal in itself. Better be flexible than fixed in life

That's probably the best way to view it. Right now I'm wondering "if the opportunity even presented itself, would I take it?"
It's sort of hard to say atm, but I'm not sure if I would

I'll be my Mom when I was coming along.. "Art is a nice hobby, learn to be an accountant or something for a career.." She was so sweet, always making sure my dreams were not mine

Like if I want to reflect on something I've drawn, and I think it came out terribly, I'll be honest. I don't need to 'sell myself' or whatever. Maybe when I can get more than a few hours of sleep I'll even enjoy drawing again

This post left my core audience of "five or so people who still put up with my bitching" in a way I hadn't anticipated.
In any case, I'm glad the sentiment resonated with so many people lol

Ya, I enjoy drawing now more than I ever did when it was my career path. Like you said, you're not caught up in selling yourself, which can make me less critical of a drawing.

But it's different strokes for different folks bc some people are motivated by the hustle of art careers and others aren't.

For sure, for sure. If anything, that hustle just made me crash out and want to stop drawing entirely, which made me realize that maybe it wasn't the right career path for me

Don’t give up your dreams. I did in 1975 & have always regretted it.

I haven't given up on them just yet. I think my dream has just shifted to "having the time to enjoy drawing without any financial incentive in mind".
Thank you, though. I wish you the best
