It only took 5 years from his first appearance in the comic books before his bane,kryptonite,was introduced in the 1943 radio show, 1949 before it was in the comics..
So it didn't take long for an"Achilles's Heel"to be found.

There have been quite stories where he's died, but in the main continuity, he was killed by Doomsday.

Then it turns out he was in a "Kryptonian healing coma." Whatever that means

In one story arc, decades ago, he was turned into sand.
Long before THAT, he swapped bodies with The Flash..
And they both didn't realize it, though, of course, their powers acted oddly.
