The extent to which Netanyahu has detroyed Israel's global reputation is hard to overstate.

What exactly did you think was Israel's global reputation?

Israel's reputation has been on a downward trajectory for a while now.

The dehumanising effect of being a coloniser has infected the military to a huge extent, as is witnessed by the genocidal tactics employed in Gaza, & now Lebanon, & the consistent willingness to abet racist/fascist settlers...

...encroaching ever deeper into the West Bank.

Personally speaking, I think they are getting to mid-1980s South Africa levels of negative public perception, because what we witness is effectively Apartheid MK2, if we're being kind, & something far darker from recent history if we're not.

Conservative Christianity has long had a theme in the "Prophecy focused arm" where the world turns on Israel.
50 years ago that seemed unhinged and impossible.
Unfortunately, it slots neatly into the "Armageddon" narrative popular with the extreme Christian right which is 100% made up. Looking Dark.

Who comes after him? Who is the most self-reflective and inclusive figure on the Israeli Right, if there’s anyone approaching such a thing? @yairwallach.bsky.social

As destructive as he is, this is far bigger than Netanyahu. Currently we can't see a figure or a political movement in Israel who can offer a robust alternative direction and certainly no willingness to come to terms with the scale of atrocities Israel has committed.

Was a time when public sentiment largely sided with Israel, e.g. at Entebbe, where Netanyahu's brother was killed. But Israel pissed a lot of it away with belligerence and expansionism, not to mention threats to use nukes. Conflating political criticism with anti-semitism hasn't helped either.

He could be a small man of history at the mercy of larger tides, like Starmer. Hard to find many Israeli politicians who aren't evil.

This is why for me, and lots of others I'm sure. Since that terrible Oct massacre I'm afraid any sympathy I had was temporary and erased by the genocidal elimination of Gazans and now Lebanese. Seeing images of champagne celebrations of recent Israeli law to hang only Palestinians sealed it.

People were making similar accusations in 1946, if not earlier. About Jews in Hungary, anyway.

It’s important to understand that’s it’s not just Netanyahu. Just like Forage it’s the only person to blame in the UK.
He’s got a lot of enablers, not least the large population that keep voting for him and the far right party’s. In Isreal he also has the military and idf backing him.

This isn’t a politician that has gone rogue, it’s a country that’s gone rogue.

He wasn’t the only regional leader to push Trump to do it, but he was arrogant enough to boast about doing so. He’s now going to be the fall guy, which creates another set of problems

That's interesting. Who else was egging Trump on? I know that the Gulf leaders were all desperately trying to restrain him - perhaps with the exception of Saudi which could have been playing both side🤔

Israel, Russia and the USA are the new axis of evil.
No government with an ounce of sanity will trust them.
No government with an ounce of humanity will want to work with them.

Think how hard Germany had to work to be readmitted to the civilised world after WW2, double it and then some.

The US has always been evil. It’s just the western world is no longer in full support of the narrative of the US as a good guy

Masks slip. "Bibi" is surely one of the most malevolent and murderous people alive on Earth today, but at least we can thank him that there will be no more pretending about what the genocidal apartheid ethnostate of "Israel" has *always* been.

This war is causing untold economic hardship globally and the finger will be pointed at two countries, Israel and the US. Israel seems to believe it can count on the US forever, but looking at the state of American domestic politics thats not very likely at all.

But like Trump, he doesn't care about the country's future, beyond his own legacy / staying out of jail.

But like Trump there is a phalanx of people in a position to do something about him who are instead enabling gross violations of law and norms.

It’s not just him, it’s his cabinet, his soldiers, Israeli settlers, the people that voted for him, all are culpable. As are we if this is verified, and we don’t cut ties and impose sanctions.

Exactly. Pretty much the whole country seems to have been infested with an unhinged cult of violence.

93% of Jewish Israelis supported the attacks on Iran in the early days!

Not just him. The other politicians and the general public who support his actions. It’s irreparable damage.

Anecdotally my Dad (late 60s very centrist) has in three years gone from softly pro Israel to wanting them to be hit with North Korea level sanctions. It's genuinely remarkable how little Netanyahu (and other cabinet ministers) care about Israel's long term diplomatic future.

I also don't think Israel realizes how much support it had in the past from many, that it has lost as a result of its actions.
The massive shows of sympathy after October 7th, buildings lit up with Magen David etc.
The self story of "everyone hates us whatever we do" is so tragically wrong.

Netanyahu is in the same category as Hitler for many people. That takes some doing.

Many of those who would have supported Israel have become disgusted by decades of discrimination and what is now a full on apartheid state. Where Jews can commit any act of violence against non- Jews, unpunished. And now genocide by a rogue state.
Calling these people anti-Semites makes it worse.

"Israel" is also brutal to Jews, and any conflation of Judaism with "Israel" is premised on a pathological anti-semitism, often masquerading as piety.

Post-WWII, support for "Israel" from "the West" is best summarized by the KKKlanadian position regarding Jewish immigration: "None is too many".

When we see Israelis armed and supported by their state, assaulting and killing Palestinians and stealing their land and property.
Call them what they are. Jewish terrorists.
Because that’s how those who resist that violence are described.

There was a comment on here yesterday about how all the pro-Palestine protests in its aftermath shocked many liberal Israelis, who’ve since decided that they are on their own and have little in common with the West.

That's all part of Netanyahoo's strategy.
Conflate Israel with being Jewish.
Israel enacts atrocities.
Attacks against Jews around the world flare up.
Netanyahoo cries about anti-Semitism and says this reinforces the need for Israel to "preemptively defend" itself.
So much for Mister Security...
