Even those who recover completely can later develop the fatal encephalitis. Every infection disrupts the immune system and can cause loss of all immunity to other infections

I was kindergarten age in the 1960s, when measles vaccines were coming and going. No family member recalls if I ever had a measles vaccine, or had measles for that matter. I'm sure I never had mumps. So last year I got the MMR vaccine.

Without the measles vaccine, 1,000 Americans (mostly children) would die every year from measles & 8,000 Americans would get measles encephalitis every year. That is the encephalitis from acute infection, not counting the thousands of delayed encephalitis cases. Death is not the only complication.

I always tell people I never got to meet my aunt due to the measles. Mom’s older sister caught them when she was a senior in HS. Only 17. She died from complications a couple of weeks later.

Which is why Mom freaked when I had the measles as a kid. I didn’t understand till I was a teenager.
