Physics in action: a truly mesmerising #SolarFlare on the Sun last night, from the same region that produced strong flares and triggered widespread aurora back in mid-November. The flare gives a hypnotic example of how plasma and magnetic fields interact in the Sun’s atmosphere.

How large is the area of the flare as compared to other celestial objects?

Just studying solar flares today I heard of a massive event 14500 yrs ago. It left markers in the soil as it so extreme. 500x larger than the Carrington Event of 1859. Our society would be wiped off the map. Some wonder if it was a Gama Ray burst
