is there a protection layer between the 2 sides of the clam shell opening? As shown it would seem like the bottles would bang against each other.

No they stay closed although you could tape it but I never did

oh, thanks. I think you are talking about the individual sleeves. I was asking about the luggage. But it's good to know in any case. ill be going to France this summer but will not buy that many bottles for a suitcase, so the sleeves are better.
