well, they want to beat China specifically to prove that our (inefficient) system is better and that renewable energy and high speed rail and universal healthcare slow them down.

Because they really don't want the people knowing a better system exists.

What China has isn't perfect, but the ways in which it is better, are ways in which those in power here in the US do not want to emulate because they reduce the power those people have. As such, whenever something potentially big happens, they push to be better than China in that one area.
