I remember when Toyota gave us the Mk4 Supra with a 2JZGTE which Toyota over engineered so much tuners were getting deep four figure hp numbers on the dino reliably and all because Toyota wanted to not repeat what happened with the Mk3's engine, and this was also during the Gentlemans Agreement era.

I wouldn't call that "overengineering". If anything, I would call it "overbuilding", and in support of my point. The blocks of those engines also went into various other Toyotas/Lexuses (Lexii?) outside Japan and were renowned for going *WAY* past 300k miles. They were heavy and built well.

Yea, the normal 2JZ went into some Lexus and Toyota models, Ford Australia did something similar with its Barra i6 and its block is the same mold from the 70's with extra ribbing and they can get the same distance if like everything, is regularly serviced.
