i'm sorry british people i am trying to learn about and understand your culture and be respectful and informed but it's very funny to have a moment that people think is a potential historical sea change moment happen in a place called "gorton and denton"

It also isn't really a place, but almost like a gerrymandered congressional district, except it's not actually not gerrymandered. Denton is a white suburb, Gorton is a diverse urban residential neighborhood of Manchester.

after i posted this i looked it up and found out that it's an area that is in the shape of a set of human lungs, which is not a coherent district shape

the English think that Wales has funny place names, but they just start to seem normal once you've been here a while and you know how to pronounce a LL, Y or W.
On the other hand, I've spoken English my whole life, and English town names will never stop being hilarious.

I see what you're saying but your country has an entire city called Gary.

Austin is a car from the 70s

All your cities are called Fishbone, Nebraska and Electricity, Wisconsin and are called cities even though only 14 people live there and one of them is a dog.

We're just amazed the choice came down to a racist talkshow academic, a racist corporate freak or a nice local lady who is a trained plumber and people actually went with the good choice.

Not only that it wasn't even close. It almost restores my faith in humanity until I remember Starmer still exists.

Fun fact, until the last constituency boundary change, the area was known as Morrissey with Smiths, and was renamed after Malfoys two sidekicks in the Harry Potter stories

It's okay, the rest of the world doesn't even try to have any respect for the country that denies people healthcare and has a mass shooting every week.

My fellow, I believe this is quite the overreaction for such a harmless joke. No ill will was meant by this, I'm sure.

There’s a Gorton in Pennsylvania and a Denton in Texas. Brits make them up just to see them get reused by Americans in the weirdest ways possible.

We end up with odd constituency names as the MP seats are divided up broadly to give each seat a roughly similar number of constituents. Under the current woeful first-past-the-post govt electoral system we're saddled with, it's pretty fair and gives each MP a theoretically manageable workload.

It's one of those weird constituencies where I used to live there and never heard of Gorton or Denton. Levenshulme, Longsight, and Burnage are much better known areas contained in that constituency.

Haha, if it helps, that’s the name of the constituency, there are two separate places called Gorton and Denton (I actually don’t know if that’s better or worse)
