How does Aldi work internationally? I mean this nonsensical division between brothers but still sharing the brand name is only in the domestic market, right? I can't see how Aldi would be as successful as it is internationally if they were pissing around with "Nord" and "Süd".

They divide international markets between them. E.g., Aldi Nord operates in France and Süd in Italy. The US is a bit of an exception: nominally its Aldi Süd, but Trader Joe's belongs to Aldi Nord.
