That is, centrist liberals are full-on pessimists/cynics about voting and people power, etc. "Democracy" is the tail of the dog of capitalism and technocratic property rights.
The only way the people win is when the wealthy self-immolate.
It's an ethos, to be sure.

I firmly believe that the Democrat party apparatus was basically driven insane by the Cold War and that they at least tacitly if not explicitly consider their role to be suppressing all Leftist access to power while maintaining corporate interests.

This perfectly explains so much of the party's behaviour at higher levels - their job isn't actually to win, they succeed in preventing the growth of leftist power if they win (by holding things in place) or if they lose (because Republicans serve the same interests and will turn things rightward).
