Okay, let's make this something a guy invented when Jill Murphy and Ursula Lee Guin did it decades earlier, to name only two. (I like Pratchett but the obsession with him as the anti-Rowling is unimaginative and sad.)

Don't forget Diana Wynne Jones! It's pretty clear that Rowling was to some extent inspired by Jones, and Witch Week (mystery and peril in a magic boarding school) was published in 1982.

Honestly I see more Worst Witch (again, mystery, peril, magic, boarding school) but I read that earlier than Wynne Jones so that's probably bias.
