There’s a line, right? With enough changes, these movies cease to be adaptations. They’re largely original works that are simply using established titles to capitalize on the name recognition.

Film adaptations don't need to pay any service to their source material to be successful.

They just need to be true to their own vision and execute it.

That said, I’m not the purist my earlier message would suggest. I enjoyed the new Frankenstein. My beef wasn’t with Del Toro. It was with fans who claimed it was hyper faithful to confer legitimacy.
