From how these assholes think, I bet it was rancid bacon grease: easy to get, fits the "smells terrible", and they think Muslims melt at the touch of anything from a pig. Second guess would be pig urine, but rancid bacon grease is easier to get.

One of the news clips said it smelled kind of like vinegar,
and showed a pic of a not-quite-empty syringe of brownish liquid,
so at least the police or somebody could identify what it is.
