I mean if the moon were closer and significantly larger than the sun the eclipse would still happen

Yeah but it wouldn't look nearly as striking (and also there would probably be significant issues re: gravity and tidal forces in that case as well)

Why wouldn't it? In normal total eclipses sometimes the moon does appear bigger than the sun and the effect is still amazing. It doesn't need to be an exact size or distance.
