One of the apartment blocks I lived in as a kid had a communal yard that we all played in and also a semi-underground car park with no cars in it or, as we thought of it, a covered roller rink.

I wish I hadn't bought so readily into "a family needs a house with a yard" when I was bringing up my kids.

And I wish the US built more densely clustered housing for families.

We've got loads of green space in the apartment neighborhood where I live. After school, my daughter just runs off to find her little gang and they run around and play till dinner time.

Public space >> yard space. When I was a kid I gave zero fucks about the grass behind our house. The playground down the street was where all the other kids were, the woods down the other way where I could run around and explore were way cooler than my mom's flowers.

I just took this photo from my balcony. And to think, people used to make fun of Communist housing estates.
