Admittedly I'm not the most well versed in this, but how do you prove age without ID? If you have to use ID, they can retain the data. And if you don't have to prove age then it's just the old "I am over 18" button and we know how that works - not very well.

You can prevent the retaining of data if you want.

How? What is physically preventing them from storing an image you upload of your ID to a government owned or managed platform? Because the other option is banning such retention by law, except you CANNOT assume the government won't be a bad actor and ignore it or find loopholes.
