In my experience, the “anti-woke views” are sincerely held in many elite circles and not just a cover. “We had a meritocratic process that happened to result in mostly white men being hired and now DEI is stupidly forcing us to change and bring in less qualified people,” etc.

Hard to overstate the impact of Me Too here as well. A lot of the anti woke backlash feels like “I should be able to fuck the interns when I want to”

I agree. People are really not interested in dismantling the systems that put them at the top, or even in acknowledging that such systems exist and work in their favor.
