God, “Be Fri” is the THE MOST PERFECT NAME FOR THIS.

I was not prepared for any part of that after "drifting apart after learning"

youtu.be/a8RHqN93qfo?si=lAEl2XTi--9uZo6k I don't have the highest expectations of Forgotten Island but I think it's exactly the kind of vibes Be Fri might've tried to do. Sony and Universal teaming up to eat Pixars lunch

It's so funny to compare this and how badly Sony fumbled K-pop Demon Hunters, these people have no fucking clue what sells and are shocked when things are a hit

What a fun world to live in, just claim a portion from a vague puff story from Hollywood Reporter would make so much money, and just further besmirch the pixar brand. Super helpful.

Pixar could stop besmirching themselves, if they really wanted to.

This is fascinating to see after a trailer for that new Dreamworks movie about two girls going to a monster battle island to save their friendship

Seriously? Guess I'm seeing that one, then.

Pixar madoka magika would have been so cool.

The Sailor Moon-like premise could've been fun!

Also "We can't have a girl power movie"? Really?

After all the Princess movies?

The only silver lining of this is I think if it existed already then the discourse around I Saw The TV Glow would have been really annoying

Oh yeah that would be one hell of a discourse

It feels like a perfect encapsulation of the stupidity of this moment in time when the company that build a multi billion dollar empire on the back of princess movies is saying "we can't sell a girl power movie"

I swear I saw a trailer for a movie recently and it was this concept. I think it was Dreamworks

Pixar has been a fucking mess for a while but so much has been conceded to reactionary conservative mindset that "what if girls were friends and they liked anime" is a tough sell. Like just make the movie.

I'm not a girl OR an anime and I'd watch it!!!!

"but what if we miss out on 10% of sales? that couldn't POSSIBLY be made up in the sales from those whom this film appeals to. we need 100% of all potential customers by dismissing half of them."

And by caving to this "anti-woke" mentality, they're just making many things about their company way more political than it actually would be otherwise.

They saw KPop Demon Hunters and were like “Nah we hate money.”

the system only allows art about friendship between women if it's a bunch of legendary actresses in their 60s-80s doing a vacation movie

And even then they have to talk about men most of the time, or the "test audiences" (which is an odd say to spell "studio execs") won't like it...

This would be a great opportunity for Pixar to try something outside their (frankly tired, overextended) artstyle, shake things up in the same way that Sony and other animation studios have been doing over the past few years. Dipping into anime aesthetics would have been very interesting. A shame.

They already did the anime style with turning red somewhat but here, they could've really went all in with it.

Friction between teens is fine and normal, but if that movie pitch didn't end with the pair uniting forever via a group finisher something went very wrong.

(Granted Serena and Molly did drift apart, but Molly never got powers)

I can’t get over the fact that they said there wasn’t a market for girl-power movies and cancelled the movie in late-2023, the year Barbie was the highest grossing movie.
