being cracked in half and used for decades as a set piece for the dueling giants of the cold war is, admittedly, I think a somewhat suis generis path for a country and it's hard to extrapolate rules from that.

Definitely, I just mean that that was like part of their whole journey, as well. And they've come out of it as one of the strongest defenders of [democratic institutions/sustainability/innovation] in the world, in spite of some ongoing challenges and what not
