My point here is more a critique of approaches like that of Seth above who argues against American imperial pursuits by merely fantasizing a consequential collapse of its influence and industry. US influence IS its military might, that hasn't been a "good thing" for a long time.

Yes. Just following up with the fact that if Europe wanted to cut ties with the US, this isn't 1941 where it was still difficult but possible to isolate some. Now it is almost impossible unless Europe wants to go whole hog toward China who is currently helping Russia. Giant hypocrisies ensue.
