"We don't have the money!" the United States says, while spending over a billion dollars a day in a war that was started for no reason.

The up front pension funding was their whole plan to tank the postal service to begin with right? Wow.

What if we all went to the White House and told them to fix it.

This should not even remotely be legal.

the USPS is funded entirely via postage. It receives no funding from the government/taxes. Congressional mandates on the budget have messed things up for a while.

One thing I just thought about

capital must expand the mass of investment to maintain the same absolute surplus value even as the rate declines. For a public service buying from private suppliers input costs rise structurally over time regardless of the public institution’s efficiency

(In this example the private logistics they depend on, which are also supported by subsidies from the government but aren’t publicly owned)

Socialism is so obviously necessary it’s not even funny

My mom works for them, is having to take a big unpaid gap for a spine surgery soon, and if she gets out of that and just doesn't have a job it's going to be genuinely crushing... :/

Fun fact about the USPS pension: it is statutorily required to hold assets to account for 100% of current and future liability. It's balance sheet is so hilariously bloated compared to what is otherwise considered to be a healthy pension fund that it's essentially been legislated to fail.

@ushouseofreps.bsky.social money for bombs that are used in an illegal war, but not for the people who actually serve the American citizens?

usps is also ran by people who used to be on the boards of fedex and ups, companies that open about wanting the usps gone

They *think* they want it gone bc they don't really consider that the rural folk who will either have no service or $100 for a little package will simply not order little packages. They think they'll be able to gouge the last mile delivery instead of it being subsidized for them

Richest country in human history.

I work every day and haven't had health insurance for a year.

The fun part is that I'm 51, an age when you should see a doctor regularly for healthy visits. Just out here hoping for the best I guess.

C'mon now, corporate media tried mocking, shaming AND guilting us commoners into being not-poor. They've done everything they can so the problem is clearly one that just can't be solved.

They always say things like "The Postal Service lost $9 billion" but that's just the cost to the tax payers. It's a service. We don't talk about the military "losing" a trillion dollars or whatever it costs now. USPS is not a business.

Pretty simple to understand stuff for anyone with a functioning brain.

I am however beyond exhausted by the fact that this might as well be mandarin to ~60% of the population that still believe in reaganomics

Article 1 of the constitution calls for post offices and post roads; most government services aren't mentioned in the constitution. As a rural citizen i wish we had postal banking as well since I know many unbanked people.

A little context; the forced pre-funding that had been mandatory for the post office pension was a tactic to make the USPS look poorer. Books are going to look good as hell before it gets sold.

I am confused. Are you saying that the USPS relies on private services for last mile delivery?
