I’m from the South and the Union was way too soft on us. All plantation land should have been confiscated and redistributed to formerly enslaved people. All Confederates should have been given a lifetime ban from holding public office, or fully disenfranchised. Treat it like the treason it was.

Those things did happen but were undone by Andrew Johnson and the supreme Court.

Should have listened to Thaddeus Stevens.

Unfortunately "malice towards none and charity for all" was naive.

If Pres. Lincoln had not been assassinated his enlightened view on rebuilding/reincorporating the defeated South would have had a completely different outcome short term & long term. Instead he was replaced w/A.Johnson & his racist cronies & the South essentially remained the same.

It actually was, at least in VA! To date, it was the largest property redistribution in U.S. history. It was more so formerly enslaved people renting it out and staying on it for free. But then Johnson let the slave owners get their land back.

All would be difficult to achieve, but war criminals like Nathan Bedford Forrest for sure.

I say only hang the officers. This is the reasonable moderate position.

Now I’ll take a big sip of coffee and look up what really happened
