Both could be true. Usual goal of defamation cease & desist letter is to get person to shut up. Speakers may know they're harming the victim by speaking the truth, & victim might be panicking about loss of reputation. Not sure what you mean by "standards" here. Motivation?

Very true, we don't know now.

There is the standard where the cease and desist is horseshit, and the standard where someone is calling out a liar. I guess those are motivations, I just think of those on other levels - justice, integrity, hubris, and myopia.

I've never accepted a case if I thought the potential client was lying, pursuing a case for spite or financial gain only, etc. I've withdrawn from representation the few times that I learned later that client was full of it. Totally agree that justice & integrity are necessary; also trust & respect.
