I can't think of a more compelling, haunting, infuriating account of a public health threat that devastated communities across the globe.

This tragedy grew because the Reagan admin treated public health like a political problem. Shilts was a reporter and it's a compelling read. I'd lost dozens of friends and colleagues to AIDS by the time this book came out and I remember being stunned and enraged to see all the missed opportunities.
