Its not just health insurance inc’s pushing to shorten length of inpatient hospital stay, a lot of hospitals are over capacity and so they need to keep turning over ‘beds’ quickly.

With a lot of kinds of surgery, the hospital makes most of its money very early in the admission. And then every day you’re taking up an inpatient bed, if they’re over capacity, is a new pt who needs surgery they can’t admit to that bed.

The incentives, the structures, are all wrong 😑

And then if the patient has to be re-admitted, the insurer can penalize the hospital for poor quality and/or high costs in their value-based care agreements.

Lotta hospitals are also short staffed for the amount of admissions on a single floor or wing.
